Congratulatory Message on the Appointments of PSSM Members to UN Posts

 
     
 

Persatuan Sains Sosial Malaysia (PSSM) would like to extend its warmest congratulations to two of its life-members for their recent appointments to prestigious positions at the United Nations. PSSM's immediate past President, Professor Dr K. S. Jomo, formerly of the Faculty of Economics and Public Administration, University of Malaya , has been appointed by the UN Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, as Assistant Secretary-General for economic development and as such is chief economic advisor to Jose Antonio Ocampo, the UN Undersecretary-General for economic affairs. Professor Jomo assumed his new assignment at the UN Headquarters in New York with effect from 1 January 2005 .

Associate Professor Dr Terence Gomez,  also from the University of Malaya 's Faculty of Economics and Public Administration, and a current Vice-President of PSSM, will be joining the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) beginning June 2005. Dr Gomez will be based in Geneva as UNRISD's Project Manager for the research area on Identity, Conflict and Social Cohesion.

PSSM wishes them well for their future challenges in the new assignments, and looks forward to drawing upon their new expertise and resources for the advancement of the social sciences in Malaysia .
